Biography of Joseph Addison |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Joseph Addison LAB REPORT Joseph was a local lad who was born in St Helens on November 1st 1872. His father, also named, Joseph, was a millwright, a typical manual job amongst Sinteliners. The town of St Helens in the second half of the nineteenth century provided great opportunities for careers in the chemical and glass industries. Anyone with an inclination for science could follow career paths with one of the town’s enterprises. It has to be said that working in a laboratory promised a much healthier life than being employed down a pit, on a glass production line or in chemical manufacturing. Joseph’s life bore testimony to this hypothesis. Moreover, he was brought up and remained in the slightly ‘less polluted’ area of Dentons Green in St Helens. His rugby career with the Saints found him in the forwards. His first match was a comfortable home victory over Ashton under Lyne on the 24th of September 1887. Joseph continued to play at least another 15 matches for the Saints with his final match occurring in the away loss to Kendal Hornets in October 1891. By that time the Saints were evolving into a formidable side with players like Tom Foulkes, Billy Cross and Kitty Briers becoming established as the spine of the team. Joseph would have played at the ‘new’ ground in Knowsley Road We can assume that Joseph would have played regular in the Reserves team fixtures as well. In his first team ventures Joseph did not trouble the scoreboard operators, certainly not a unique experience for a forward in predominantly low-scoring matches. Joseph married Edith Ellen Tickle in just after the turn of the century and the new couple soon had a baby daughter, Maggie May. Not long after Joseph moved out of the laboratory and into the world of factory management. The 1939 Census has him living in Greenfield Road, Dentons Green, St. Helens and being listed as a retired Glass Works Manager. Joseph died in January 1962 at the age of 89. |
