Biography of William Wilson |
---|
HERITAGE NO : William Wilson COUNTY WINGER William was born in Kendal, Westmorland on the 15th of March 1863. His father, also named William was a hairdresser. As a young man he lived in Serpentine Terrace, Kendal where he worked as a Grocer`s Assistant. He married Mary Ann Wallace in 1894 and they proceeded to have two children, namely Charlotte and William. William played for the great Kendal Hornets team which enjoyed a close relationship with the Saints at the time. He made his debut for the Saints on the 7th of April, 1888 in the match against arch rivals Wigan. The Saints suffered a defeat that day. We can assume that William was invited to play by Billy Cross who was instrumental in recruiting players from the Kendal Hornets team for the odd match or even persuading them to pursue a new life in St. Helens. William was in the team for the next three matches but we have to conclude that he returned to Kendal for whatever reason. That said it was not the last occasion that he would don a Saints’ jersey. Indeed, William returned to the Hornets and became a top winger for that Club. He gained county caps for Westmorland over seven years. In the twilight of his career he was tempted to try his hand at Knowsley Road once more. In April 1895 he played four matches for the Saints in the stand off position. Perhaps he was slotted in that position for his guile and experience. Possibly, he had lost the pace necessary for a winger in those days. NORTHERN UNION ERA The tall winger played his only official Northern Union game for the first team in the narrow home league loss Stockport by 3 points to 0 on the 28th September 1895. He played on the left wing in this match. Wilson also played in two more friendlies for the Saints against Halifax. The 1891 Census has him living in Serpentine Terrace, Kendal where he worked as a Grocer`s Assistant. If we have nailed the correct identity. Will died in October 1921 leaving behind his wife Mary Alice and two children. Can you help the SHS by supplying any other personal or playing details? |
