Richard was born in 1854 in Widnes. His father, also named Richard, was a bricklayer. In the 1880s Richard Jar had moved to the Thatto Heath area of St. Helens and in 1891 he was lodging at 57 Lugsmore Lane. He was described as a joiner.

He made his debut for the Saints on the 19th of November 1887 in the away fixture against Moseley. Unfortunately his first match ended in defeat. In all Richard played in the St. Helens pack of forwards on 40 occasions. His last recorded match was in the home victory over York on the 27th of December 1890. The victory was earned thanks to tries by Hunt and Joe Brownbill and the scoring of 3 minors. York failed to register a point of any description.

In October 1893 Richard married Elizabeth Halsall and they proceeded to raise five children. In a change of employment, Richard moved his clan to 283/5 Clock Face Road to live and work in a Public House. He was still at the same address in 1911 but the pub side of the business had disappeared and he was operating a grocers there. In addition Richard had taken up his tools again to work as a joiner.

He died in St. Helens in April 1927 at the age of 72.
