Biography of Thomas Baines

HERITAGE NO :
Thomas Gott Baines

GOTT THE LOT

Thomas was born in Kendal, Westmorland in January 1861. In the 1881 census, Thomas Gott Baines was living at the Ship Inn, Kendal, run by his father and Tom was listed as a ‘printer compositor’, aged 20.

Nicknamed ‘Captain’ he originally played for the great Kendal Hornets team. Tom is described as follows in ‘The History of Football in Kendal’: “Right anywhere, including full back and forward; a tremendous kicker; winner of many prizes on the running track.”

Tom made his debut for the Saints in March 1888 against Barrow. He played full back in that game. Undoubtedly, he must have been invited to experience rugby in St Helens by the redoubtable Billy Cross. In all Tom played eight matches for the Saints which would indicate that his rugby intentions were much more than just a social visit. Indeed Tom played occasionally for the Saints over two years. That noted he was not to remain in South Lancashire.

He remained in Kendal before moving with his wife, Elizabeth to Palmerston Street, Moss Side, Manchester. In 1901 he is 40 years old, with two children and a ‘printer Linotype operator’.

Tom died in July 1921, aged 60, and his death is registered Charlton, Manchester.
