 HERITAGE NO : William Holt GRAND DEBUT William was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 10th of December 1862. His father was a bookkeeper and the family were comfortably off. They lived at 81 Peter Street, St. Helens which was the heart of the Saints’ recruitment area. His debut was a rather grand affair which saw the Saints face their friends and rivals, the Kendal Hornets team. The match was played at Fleetwood on the 10th of September 1887 and it was arranged to celebrate the opening of the Promenade and Library in the resort. The game itself ended in an honourable draw. William went on to make 18 appearances for the first team as a member of the pack of forwards. Incredibly all of his matches occurred in the one season with his final outing taking place on the 21st of April 1888 against Kendal Hornets again. This time the boys from Westmorland won the day. In October 1884 he married Mary Ellen Mawdsley and they raised three children. By 1891 William was working as a steam engine worker. Ten years later the family had moved to Croppers Hill and William had found employment as a caretaker in local government. William died in St. Helens on the 27th of February 1949 at the age of 86. |
