Biography of Edward Salt Eastham

HERITAGE NO :
Edward Eastham

RAG AND BONE MAN

William was born in Warrington in October 1868. His father, also named Edward, was born in Bruscough and worked as a Carter. He spent his early years in Warrington but sadly after his mother’s death Edward went to live with his sister.

Universally known as ‘Salt’ he played 16 matches for the Saints mostly as a wing three-quarter. The youngster made his debut was on the 24th of September 1887 in the home victory over Ashton under Lyne. His final match was against Bury on the 4th of January 1888 when the Saints ran out winners again. Salt astounded the spectators by playing in his bare feet and could even drop goals care-footed. He played 16 consecutive matches in this period and there the rugby story ends. Perhaps he suffered a serious injury or moved his rag and bone collection to another area.
