 HERITAGE NO : William Grice BARNSLEY BOUND William was born in St. Helens on the 2nd of July, 1864. His father, also named William, was a painter. In 1881, the family was living at 60 Raglan Street, St. Helens. At this time William was working as a glass bottle maker. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. William made his debut for the Saints on the 13th of September 1884 in a home victory over Birkdale Free Warriors. His brother, James, also played in the same game. Both brothers played in the pack of forwards. William is recorded as having played a total of 10 first team matches but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. A few years after his debut, William relocated across the Pennines to carry on his glass bottle blowing in Barnsley. He married Mary Cartwright in the Spring of 1885 in Barnsley and they went on to raise four daughters. In 1911 the family were living at 110 Bridge Street in Barnsley. William died in Barnsley in January 1931 at the age of 66. |
