HERITAGE NO : Thomas Burke NOT THE LEIGH TENOR Thomas was born in Athlone, Ireland on the 24th of September 1866. He ended up in St. Helens in the 1880s and worked as a collier down one of the local pits. In 1891 he was living at 3 Peter Street, St. Helens right in the heart of streets of rugby recruitment. This rugged forward made his debut for the Saints on the 24th of September 1887 in the home victory over Ashton-under-Lyne. In all Thomas made 4 appearances for the first team and would have played many games for the A team over the years. His final outing for the first team was on the 18th of April 1891 as part of an away loss to Walkden. That day he played alongside club legends like Tommy Foulkes, Freddie Little and John Gladwin. In 1911 his family lived at 24 Eccleston Street, St. Helens and Thomas remained there for the rest of his life. He had married Rebecca Kilshaw in St. Helens in April 1890 and they went on to have seven children. Thomas died in St. Helens in November 1944 at the age of 78. |
