MATCH REPORT : St. Helens Recs v St Helens 21 February 1880 CHARITY MATCH IN AID OF THE IRISH RELIEF FUND The match was arranged to raise money for the Irish Relief Fund. Several former Saints’ players, the likes of Austin Carr, donned their rugby kits once again to augment the proceedings. The Club founder, Douglas Herman, acted as the umpire for the St. Helens Club. Rugby rules were observed and a most interesting game was played. The Saints recruited the sparking back, A. Lycett, for the encounter. In the end a well contested game was won by St. Helens by one goal and one touchdown to two touchdowns for the Recreational Club. The band of the 47th Liverpool Rifles Volunteers performed a selection of music in the afternoon. |
