HERITAGE NO : Thomas Glover CHIEF ENGINEER WITH ST HELENS CORPORATION Thomas was born in St. Helens on the 15th of October 1857. As a young man he was trained as a Clerk in the local Gasworks. His employment connections drew him into the ‘Originals’ network and onto the rugby field. His debut was on the 9th of October 1875 when the Saints defeated Liverpool Rifle Brigade at the Queens Recreational Grounds in Boundary Road, St Helens. Thomas is recorded as playing three matches for the Saints with the last occurring on the 21st of February 1880 when the Saints defeated local rivals St. Helens Recs in a Charity match to raise money for the Irish Distress Fund. Of course there a few records of our teams for those days and Thomas probably played in many other matches as well. In 1881 he was living with his parents at 118 Higher Parr Street, Parr, St. Helens. We know that he went to Holy Trinity School in St. Helens. He worked at one time for fellow Saint John Pritchard and gained engineering qualifications at St. Helens Technical Institute. After joining the joining the Institute of Civil Engineers in 1910 he worked at St. Helens Corporation as its Chief Engineer. He married Anne Brown Sharples in in December 1887 and eventually the couple moved to live at Olive Mount in the salubrious residential dissect of St Annes in the town. He died on the 12th of October, 1930 at the age of 72 and left £27 618 to his widow. That amount has a value in 2023 of approximately £2.3 million, not bad for a lad from Parr!
