MATCH REPORT : St. Helens v Widnes 13 March 1880 The ground at the St. Helens Football Club, at Queen’s Park was the scene of great disorder and misconduct. The spectators who numbered some hundreds, became so demonstrative and rowdy that anything but decent conduct was observed. Many times they trespassed over the lines - in fact they more than once they prevented the game from being played fairly carried on by encircling the players. Both players and visitors were loud in their complaints the treatment they received. I do not advocate a charge being made to witness matches, but really people who cannot behave themselves should be prevented from entering the ground. There was no , policeman about and even if there had been it would have been a matter of impossibility to have kept the whole of the ground clear where so many were gathered together. The easiest plan to prevent a similar occurrence would be to rope the ground, and the idea should commend itself to this and other football clubs in the town. NOTE It would appear that the disturbances did bring about action. In the following season St. Helens Rangers played with the recommended ropes in place. |
