Biography of William Swift |
---|
HERITAGE NO : William Swift LABOURING HALF BACK William was a local lad who was born in St Helens in October 1857. His father, Henry, was a glass flattener. In 1871 he was living with his parents at 56 Rigby Street, St. Helens and working as a general labourer. He made his debut for the Originals on the 22nd of November 1879 against the Birkenhead Wanderers. The Saints won that match with William playing in the half backs. We have William as playing in three matches that said it is highly probable, given his recorded activities over a considerable length of time, that William featured in other games for the Saints. His final match for the St. Helens Rangers came on the 29th of October 1891 when he played on the wing in a victory over Widnes True Blues. He was still living in Rigby Street in St. Helens in 1881. He married Janet Costello in St. Helens on the 24th of July 1896. Sadly he died just two years later in March 1898 at the age of 41. |
