Biography of Hugh Greenhouse |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Hugh Greenhouse POSTMASTER Hugh was certainly a man who moved around a great deal. He was born in Breconshire, Wales on the 10th of May 1859. His family moved to live and work on the salt fields of Cheshire in the 1870s. It was no doubt that his business and sporting contacts that led to an invitation from the Saints to play against local rivals St. Helens Recs on the 21st of February 1880. The match was a charity affair to raise money for the Irish Relief Fund. We believe that his nearby chum, Hugh Alfred Lycett, accompanied Alfred onto the playing area that day. In their only outing for the Saints, Lycett and Greenhouse finished the contest on the winning side. In 1881 Hugh was living in Monks. Cheshire and was soon to marry Mary Woods. At some point he relocated to live in Southport, Lancashire. In this location he worked as a postmaster. He died in Southport on the 5th of February 1953 at the grand old age of 93. |
