Biography of Robert Hesketh
HERITAGE NO : Robert Hesketh KIRKBY CLERK Robert was born in June 1854 in Kirkby, near Liverpool. His father was from the same town but sadly died when Robert was just 5 years old. Robert became a clerk at a Glass manufacturing company in St. Helens and held two a responsible position. He lived at 2 Wellington Terrace, St. Helens close to Edward Atherton Robinson, another Saint worked as a bank cashier. One can envisage how these chaps from a more salubrious part of St. Helens were recruited to try out at rugby. He made his debut for St. Helens on the 1st of December 1877 in the away fixture against Fairfield. The Widnes side proved too powerful for the Saints on that day. Robert played once more on the 9th of October 1880 in a home match against local rivals St. Helens Recs. Robert played in the forwards pack that day but ended up on the losing side. His team mates that day included joiner Tom Roughsedge and the irrepressible Jim Webb. Robert married Ellen Hockenhull and they went on to have three children, namely, Henry, John and Rachel. The family moved to Kirkby in the 1880s and resided at Red Brow in the small town. Robert was working as a machine clerk. By the time of the 1891 Census, the Hesketh clan had returned to St. Helens and were living in Gilbert Street. The last twenty years of his life were spent at at 2 Wellington Terrace, St. Helens. He had retired from his employment just before he died in St. Helens in the Spring of 1911 aged 56.
