Biography of John Scott |
---|
HERITAGE NO : John Scott CLERK DID WELL John was born in Rainford, Lancashire on the 6th of November 1857. His father, also named John, was an agricultural labourer. He definitely played two matches for the Saints. Of course, our records are somewhat limited because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period. His number of appearances was likely to be higher. His first recorded match was on the 22nd of November 1879 when the ‘Originals’ played Birkenhead Rangers. The match was played at Queens Park off Prescot Road and he ended on the winning side. That day he played at full back but John was equally at home in the three-quarters. His next match was again for the Originals later that season in a Charity match against local rivals St. Helens Recs. The game was organised to raise monies for the Irish Distress Fund. He also played for the Eccleston Rangers just one week later on the 29th of February 1880. The Eccleston Rangers hosted the Halton View Wanderers and John was again on the side of the victors. It is interesting to note that John also played in the twenty a side trial match organised by the St. Helens Recs on the 18th of October 1879, this was prior to any of John’s above-mentioned games. It was certainly a case of ‘have boots will play anywhere.’ He married Dorothy Banks on the 5th of August 1878 and the couple went on to have six children. John trained as a solicitor’s clerk which placed him in the acceptable social circle for joining the “Originals’. In 1881 he was living at 37 Doulton Street, St. Helens. After he was qualified he gained a position as the Secretary of the Liverpool Licensed Victualers Association and moved to live at ‘Rossie’ on Prescot Road in the salubrious St. Anne’s area of the town. At some ;point he relocated to Southport where he died in October 1945 at the age of 88. |
