Biography of Harry Varley |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Harry Varley SAINTS LIFER Harry was born in St. Helens in October 1852. His father James was an iron founder employed 45 men and 25 boys. It is true to say that he had built a very successful business in St. Helens and dallied in the upper echelons of the business and social circles in the town. His mother, Annie, is from the Isle of Man. The 1861 census recorded the large family living in Eccleston Road, St. Helens. Indeed, Harry had nine siblings included brother William and Richard who both were to play for St. Helens alongside Harry. The Varleys really set the precedent later to be followed by the Creeveys, Warings and Cunninghams amongst others. At the age of eighteen, Henry had started work as a ‘pattern maker’ and the family have moved to live at The Croft, Water Mill Road, St. Helens. He later worked at the Waterloo Foundry. Harry played in the very first match for the newly-formed St. Helens RFC, a twenty-a-side game against Liverpool Rifle Brigade, on 24th of January 1874 at Boundary Road, St. Helens. He was played half back that day. St. Helens didn’t trouble the scorers on the day at all; the opposition that day made five touchdowns, but didn’t convert any so the result was ‘a draw in their favour’! Harry married Elizabeth Hartley, known as Betsy, on the 9th of May 1877. Elizabeth’s father was Abraham Hartley, a glassmaker. Harry and Elizabeth moved to Fern Tree Villas, 174, Denton’s Green Lane, St. Helens. In true Valley fashion the couple went on to raise seven children. Harry Varley died on the 8th of February 1901. He left his widow Elizabeth the sum of £6,328-5-4. The Bank of England calculate that sum to be worth £615 000 in 2023. The St. Helens Newspaper carried news of his passing on 15th February 1901, saying that he ‘was best remembered in connection with all the athletic clubs of the town. He was the best batsman at St. Helens cricket club and was about 45 when he died.’ The report continues: ‘Before the formation of the St. Helens Football Club, when the St. Helens Rangers was one of the leading clubs in the district, Mr. Varley was one of the playing members. When the St. Helens football club was formed, he was a playing member, became a member of the Committee and ultimately a Vice-President. In which position he was when St. Helens won the Championship of the 2nd Division under the old rugby union. He was also a Vice-President of the old West Lancs Union. When the Northern Union was formed, Mr. Varley relinquished office but has since taken a deep interest in the affairs of the club.’ |
