Biography of Martin Hammill
HERITAGE NO : Martin Joseph Hammill GAMBLED WELL Born on 26th February 1857, the 1871 census tells us that Martin was at a boarding school called Tattenhall House. His father, John Cummings Hammill, was a brewer. Martin played in the first ever match for the Saints on January 24th 1874. He would have been 16 years old that day. The opponents that day were Liverpool Royal Infirmary. The match ended in a draw even though the Liverpool team scored five tries to nil. John played in the forwards that day. He continued to play for St Helens RFC through the 1870s. Martin was also an outstanding cricketer with St. Helens CC in the 1870s and 1880s. By 1881 Martin and his mother Agnes are living at a house at 121 Dentons Green Lane. By Ten years later, he is a boarder at 125 Cooper Street and is described as ‘manager of Alkali works’. The ‘high’ society in St. Helens in those days were a fairly tight knot community and marriages within those confines were not unusual. Martin married Grace Gamble from the Chemical Manufacturing clan. He soon became a ‘manager in chemical manufacturing industry’ and moved into The Gables, St. Helens. On the day the census is recorded, a visitor was Hannah Gamble. Martin and Grace later moved to Sussex on retirement. Probate records tell us that Martin Joseph Hammill of Wilbury, Cissbury Road, Worthing died on the 10th of April, 1921. Grace Hammill, his widow and John Hammill stockbroker were left £4,404-6-6.
