Biography of Charles Ross
HERITAGE NO : Charles Fidler Ross DENTAL Charles was born in January 1859 in St. Helens. His father William came down from Scotland and, in 1861 the family were living at 100, Liverpool Road, St. Helens. William, the father was a clerk at the Crown Glassworks in the town.Charles and his brother, Edward, were members of the St. Helens RFC Originals. Charles played as a half back for the Saints. The Ross family formed a continuous presence in the Club as the team transformed from a group of well to do Gentlemen in the 1870s to the days of St. Helens Rangers in the 1880s. Charles and his brother Edward Ross in particular, were instrumental in giving the Club much stability in the transformation years from the Original St. Helens RFC through the Eccleston Rangers transition, the St. Helens Rangers years right through to the Club setting up home at Knowsley Road inn 1890. Moreover, it could be maintained that the Ross family were the only constant stars in the Saints’ sky in the first 30 years of its existence. Charles married Harriet Holloway in 1883 and they had two sons, Charles and Herbert. Charles was somewhat of a rover with regards to his employment. He had positions that included operating as a schoolmaster in an Orphan’s School in Cheadle, Cheshire. He eventually settled in a dental related industry and became Manager of a Dental works in the Liverpool area. Charles died in June 1903 at the age of 44. His death was registered in West Derby, Liverpool.
