Biography of Alfred Lycett

HERITAGE NO :
Alfred Arden Lycett

SALT MAKER

Alfred was born in Wolstanton, Staffordshire in the Spring of 1852. His father, William, moved the family early in Alfred’s life to Sandbach, Cheshire. It was in that location that his father became a sale manufacturer. Alfred followed his father into the lucrative salt making business. In June 1877 he married Mary Batchelder.

Beyond the world of salt, Alfred was a very decent rugby player and turned out for several Clubs in the Cheshire and Lancashire area. It was no doubt that his business and sporting contacts that led to an invitation from the Saints to play against local rivals St. Helens Recs on the 21st of February 1880. The match was a charity affair to raise money for the Irish Relief Fund. We believe that his nearby chum, Hugh Greenhouse, accompanied Alfred onto the playing area that day. In their only outing for the Saints, Lycett and Greenhouse finished the contest on the winning side.

Alfred led a most interesting life. In the 1880s he decided to move across the world and settle down in Australia and New Zealand. Records tell us that he lived in both colonies. In 1885 he was living in Waipawa, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. It is evident that Alfred was keen to pursue the manufacture of salt in his new surroundings. His progress down under was somewhat delayed for in Australia in 1889 he was sentenced to six months hard labour for conspiracy. Two years later he applied to the Australian Patents Office to register a new method for the manufacture of salt. It appears that a very successful career ensued in the city of Sydney.

Alfred lived with his family in the Balmain area and died in that location in October 1930 at the age of 78.
