Biography of John Burrill |
---|
HERITAGE NO : John Burrill SURGEON REQUIRED John was born in St Helens in September 1856. He was in the team that played in the forwards in the mid 1870s, colloquially known as the “Originals’. John was a regular member of the team at that time. In all he is recorded as playing in 6 matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that was that period, the number of appearances is likely to be much higher. On the 8th of November 1879 the Saints were playing Widnes in an away fixture. We know little about the match only that John suffered a severe injury in which he split his knee cap. The newspapers reported that a surgeon had to be called out to him to treat his injury. John somehow recovered and played for the Originals later that season in a Charity match against local rivals St. Helens Recs. Indeed that was his last recorded appearance for the Saints. John worked as an analytical chemist, a job which generated a very good income. St Helens with its glass and chemical industries meant that his services were always in high demand. He lived at 35 Rigby Street in St. Helens. John died in his hometown in April 1926 at the age of 69. |
