PASHA

No, Jammer isn’t that old! This James Graham was universally known as ‘Pasha’.

James Graham was born on the 4th of May, 1865 in Kendal, Westmorland. His father, Robert was a Carter and they lived at 11 Longpool, Kendal. Before the age of 16 James was already building his strength working as a general labourer.

Pasha was great friend of Billy Cross; the two chums had played together for Kendal Hornets. The 1891 Census shows James visiting Billy on Census night at the Duke of Cambridge Hotel in Duke Street where Billy was the landlord.

For the first match of the 1888/89 season Billy and Pasha were in St Helens playing in a friendly match for the Saints against the curiously named Mr Higson’s Salford team. The Saints and Kendal Hornets had been playing each other regularly for a few seasons by then and indeed they had played each other in the penultimate match of the previous season. A game that Kendal Hornets won. Perhaps the the invitation for Cross and Graham came after that particular match. Furthermore, Tom Baines, another Kendal Hornets star, had played a few games for St Helens in March 1888 as well. The Saints triumphed on the double debut and both chums played for the Saints throughout the next two seasons.

At the start of the 1890/91 season Pasha and Billy went in different rugby directions. On the 6th of September 1890 the Saints were entertaining Manchester Rangers in the first ever match to be held at Knowsley Road. Meanwhile, on the same day, James was making his debut for Leigh against Manningham. However, the separation was relatively short and Pasha was back playing for St Helens in the Boxing Day match against York. Over the next two seasons he would made 58 appearances and scored 3 tries for Leigh whilst making the odd guest appearance for the Saints. Such was rugby in those days. From the commencement of the 1892/3 season Pasha was back permanently in St. Helens colours.

In the days prior to the Northern Union in 1895, James played 146 times for the Saints, scoring 3 tries and kicking 3 goals in the process. The History of Football in Kendal tells us that his nickname was Pasha and that he was a good forward who "found better pay with St. Helens; could handle the ball well and one who knew a few tips in scrummaging”.

Outside rugby James worked as a joiner. He married Louisa Montgomery in 1892 and they went on to have two children.

NORTHERN UNION ERA

The tough Cumbrian forward went on to play 15 matches for the Saints in the fledgling Northern Union competition between March 1896 and April 1897. His last official first team match was against Wigan on the 11th of March 1897, a game the Saints went on to win by 3 points to nil.

James was a joiner by trade. He lived with his wife, Louisa and two sons in Vincent Street, St Helens. In 1911.

After 1911 we no little about the family. Louisa and her family moved to Warrington where she was still resident in 1939 and described as a widow.
