MATCH REPORT : ST. HELENS V STOCKPORT 19 APRIL 1894

The match attracted about 2000 spectators. The home team were represented by a very weak team and played uphill during the first period. Peter Dale started for St.Helens and he showed up very well by pressing the visitor’s line. Soon after the Stockport forwards dribbled up to the other end where King scored for them and Saville converted. A few minutes later some smart passing resulted in Chorlton scoring the second try for Stockport. Saville once again nailed the conversion. The subsequent play was very even up to the change of ends with Tom Sudlow scoring a splendid try for the saints.

Half time score: - Stockport 10 St Helens 3

In the second period St. Helens exhibited brilliant form and tries were scored in succession by John Appleton, Buff Berry and Tom Sudlow with a brace. As a result of faulty place kicking none of the tries were improved upon. St. Helens ultimately won a good game.

Score: - St. Helens 5 tries and 15 points to Stockport 2 tries and 2 goals for 10 points.
