 HERITAGE NO : George William McNelly BRICKLAYER George was a local lad who was born in St Helens in July 1869. His father, William, was a bricklayer. His surname was written with a different spelling on some records. George was to following his father’s footsteps and picked up his trowel and hod to become a bricklayer. In 1881 he was living at Oldfield Street. His house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. George was a skilful centre three-quarter who made his debut for the Saints on the 17th of December 1887 in an away fixture at Wigan. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a winning start to his first team career. We have George down as playing in 15 first team games over three seasons. His final outing was on the 26th of April 1890 when the Saints lost an away match at Warrington. In 1891 he was living at 7 Cooper Street close to the centre of St. Helens and ten years later his residence was a lodging house on Market Street which would not receive many five star reviews. George died in St. Helens in January 1915 at the age of 45. |
