Joseph was born in Chester in August 1859. His father, also named Joseph, worked as a registrar at the Cheshire County Court. His mother, Louisa, was some 32 years younger than the breadwinner. By 1871 the family had moved to live in Mold, North Wales where Joseph was a scholar and his father had taken up employment as an accountant.

We know of several Saints’ players who had made the move from this area of North Wales to work in the coal mines of St. Helens. Again this was the case with Joseph. In the late 1870s, Joseph moved to St. Helens and probably brought some rugby skills with him. He made his debut for the Eccleston Rangers against Widnes True Blues on the 10th of February, 1880. Joseph played full back that day and the Eccleston Rangers won the match. His Saints’ debut came on the 13th of March 1880 against Widnes. It was the first match that the former Eccleston Rangers lads were completing the season’s fixtures for the Originals. The contest was marred by almost riotous invasions of the pitch by the local spectators.

He played 62 matches at the Club for the next twelve years taking up the full back role with the occasional foray on the wing.

Joseph married Alice Leyland on the 20th of November, 1881 and they eventually raised two sons. The family moved into Lewis Street in the town and Joseph worked as a stationary engine driver. As with many families house relocations were common and eventually the Rogers family settled at 130 Birchley Street in the centre of St. Helens.

Joseph died in the town in July 1924 at the age of 64.
