Biography of Albert Tickle

HERITAGE NO :
Albert Tickle

OVERCAME DISABILITY

Albert was born in St. Helens on the 14th of November 1863. The 1881 census gives us Albert living with his father Henry, who was 47 and a glassmaker. At the time Albert was recorded as a lead worker. Albert was deaf and dumb from early childhood.

Albert Tickle was a class act in the early days of St. Helens rugby. He played for both the Saints and St. Helens Recs. Albert was also a well known personality around town. In the 1879/80 season Albert was one of the young lads who regularly had watched the Originals play at the Queens Park Ground. He joined the newly formed Eccleston Rangers who played on the same pitch as the St. Helens RFC.

Albert made his debut for the Saints on the 12th of February 1882 in an away fixture against Aspull. Albert was on the winning side that day. show that he played at least 38 matches for the Saints in those days. The number of appearances was likely to be much higher as we have a paucity of team lists from the early 1880s. Albert played for Liverpool and District v Wigan at Wigan on 5th December 1885.

Albert’s disability created one great disadvantage on the field. In those days when a tackled player could not go any further, it was up to him to shout ‘held’. In his early playing days, Albert got some fearful treatment when opposing players did not hear the expected cry of surrender.

Albert married Annie Robertshaw in late 1898. Annie was also deaf and dumb. The couple set up house at 9, Stanhope Street, St. Helens. Albert worked as a sheet glass grinder. They had a son, Albert David Tickle, who was born in early 1902 in St. Helens. Soon after this date the family moved to Poulton Road in Southport.

Albert died in March 1910 at the age of 46 and his death was registered in Ormskirk. His widow continued to live in Southport and worked as a dressmaker.
