 HERITAGE NO : Daniel Mowe LONGFORD LAD Daniel was born in Longford, Warwickshire in October 1859. His father, Richard, was a miner who undoubtedly moved to the prolific coal mining pits in South Lancashire for secure employment. Definitively, he moved his family to the Parr district of St. Helens in the 1860s. In the 1879/80 season Daniel was one of the young lads who regularly had watched the Originals play at the Queens Park Ground. He joined the newly formed Eccleston Rangers who played on the same pitch as the St. Helens RFC. Interesting in the summer months Daniel also played cricket for the Eccleston Rangers Cricket Club on the same playing fields off Prescot Road. He made his debut for the St. Helens Rangers the 9th of October 1880 against St. Helens Recs. The Saints lost that day. His last match recorded was on the 15th of October 1887, when Daniel was part of a winning team against the Oldham outfit Werneth. He must have played regularly for the second team as well over these seven years. Daniel married Sarah Chadwick in 1882 and they settled down in Lyon Street, St. Helens. He did not follow his dad down the mine but worked as a glass bottle maker. The couple had three children. He later moved to Horace Street in the town and passed away in May 1931 at the age of 71. He is buried in the Town Cemetery. Following Daniel’s death, there was tragedy for the family. His son Richard Edward Mowe, like his father a glass bottle blower, was killed in action in the Middle East in 1941. He was a Lance Corporal in the 12th Royal Lancers [Prince of Wales’s] Royal Armoured Corps. |
