Biography of William Gee

HERITAGE NO :
William Gee

GEE THE YOUNGER

William was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 3rd of March 1863. His father, Peter, was a glass maker and they lived in Wilson Street in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town.

In 1881, William was residing in Kirkland Street which was located in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. His elder brother, James, was playing in the pack of forwards for Eccleston Rangers. We can safely assume that James introduced William to the game.

William made his debut for St. Helens Rangers on the 30th of September, 1882 in the away drawn fixture against Glodwick. He also was in the pack of forwards that defeated the Widnes Vipers at home on the following Saturday. His last recorded match was in the victory over Southport Olympique on the 16th of February, 1884. In all he is recorded as playing in four matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher.

In 1891, William was still living with his widowed mother at 61 Hope Street in St. Helens. He was recorded as working as a general labourer.

We believe that William died in Liverpool in December 1918 at the age of 55.
