 HERITAGE NO : John Joseph McLaughlin EXPORT MANAGER Known as Joseph he was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 21st of March, 1862. He was one of three brothers who played for the Saints in the 1880s alongside his siblings Adam and Daniel. His father, John, was a Railway Pass Guard who sadly died when Joseph was a young boy. He married Maud Johnson in 1887 and they raised a family of 10 children. Joseph played as a centre three-quarter and made his debut for the Saints on the 30th of September 1882 in a match against Glodwick. That game ended in a draw and Joseph continued to play another 16 matches for the Club in the first team. His final outing was against Salford on the 16th of October 1886, match which ended in defeat for the Saints. The brothers McLaughlin played in different positions for the Club. Joseph was a back and Adam and Daniel were forwards. Joseph later adjudicated matches as a referee. The siblings also followed radically different paths outside rugby. Joseph trained as a bookkeeper and lived at 93 Windleshaw Road, St. Helens. He rose through the ranks at Pilkington’s Brothers to become the Manager of the Export Department. His affiliation to the firm were cemented when he was drafted onto the St. Helens Recs. committee. Joseph died in December 1945 at the age of 83 in St. Helens. |
