Biography of Matthew Whalley |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Matthew Whalley CRESCENT LANDLORD Matthew Whalley was born in Rainford, Lancashire on the 20th of October 1859. His father, Robert, was a tobacco pipe maker. As a child Robert’s family lived at The Rookery in Rainford. In the 1860s though the family relocated to the rapidly expanding industrial town of St. Helens. They chose to live in the centre of town no doubt attracted by the footfall for a tobacco pipe business. Matthew lost his father in the following decade and the 1881 Census shows his living with his widowed mother at 51 New Cross Street, St Helens. His mother was a grocer in the town. Matthew worked as a labourer in the local glassworks. He made his debut for the Saints on the 18th of September 1882 against St. Helens Recs. The Saints were victorious that day. He could play as a three-quarter of in the pack of forwards. His last first team game was on the 22nd of November 1884 against Walkden. He married Ellen Taylor on Christmas Day 1884 at Christchurch in Eccleston. The couple proceeded to have 5 children. Matthew left his employment at the glassworks to become a publican at The Crescent in Sandfield Crescent, St. Helens. This was situated adjacent to next to Phythian Street in the town centre. His family business background in dealing with the public everyday probably made this an easy transition. Matthew held the licence for the public house for at least 15 years. We know that the Crescent closed on the 1st of May, 1906 so perhaps Matthew relocated after this date. The family are curiously absent from the 1911 Census. Matthew died in St. Helens in April 1928 at the age of 68. |
