Biography of John Gregson

HERITAGE NO :
John Gregson

PHOENIX MINE HOST

John was born on the 19th of August 1860 in St. Helens. His father, Edward, was from Wigan and was an engine fitter. His mother, Mary Ann Dixon was locally born. In 1861 the sizeable family were living at 119 Duke Street, St Helens. The clan were still at the same address ten years later.

By 1881 most children had left the house and father Edward had died in 1876. Mother Mary was listed as a beer seller and resident at 41 Lowe Street, St. Helens. John was working as a bricklayer. John’s sister was a also living in the same house with her husband, John Basnett and their daughter Agnes. John was to make his debut with the Saints some three years later and perhaps it was his brother-in-law who persuaded him to give rugby a go.

John Gregson made his debut for St. Helens Rangers against Newton on the 7th of January 1881. He played in the three-quarters that day and the Saints finished the match as victors. He went on to play at least another 24 matches for the Club but this number was probably somewhat higher as we have an incomplete record of team sheets from this period. We believe that John also played several matches for St. Helens Recs in the same decade.

In the summer of 1887 John married Mary Ellen Richardson who heralded from Great Crosby, Lancashire. Four years later the couple had two children and were living at 25 Oxford Street, St. Helens. John was still working as a bricklayer. Some time later the selling of beer was to re-emerge in the Gregson clan.

The 1911 census shows that John Gregson, aged 50, was the licensee of the Phoenix Hotel in Canal Street, St Helens. This would have been a busy establishment, with the glassworks close by.

John died March 1923 in St Helens at the age of 63.
