 HERITAGE NO : John Joseph Hartley CAPTAIN ON THE WING John was a local lad born on the 5th of December 1864.. His father, Edward, was an engine fitter. William married Victoria Kelly on the 28th of December 1891 and they had one daughter named . Jim lived at 133 Peter Street, St. Helens and he held the rank of Captain in the military. He played for the Saints prior to the commencement of the Northern Union. Jim his debut for St. Helens against Sutton on the 14th of January 1882. Jim was part of a victorious side that day. He was a nippy winger and Jim went on to make at least four further appearances for the Saints. He played his final match for the Saints in the victory over local rivals, St.Helens Recs, on the 1st of March 1884. At some point John and his family moved the seaside town of Southport. John died in Southport on the 16th of March 1954 at the age of 89 and left the princely sum of £5740 ion his will. |
