MATCH REPORT : WIDNES EXCELSIOR V ST. HELENS RANGERS 28 JANUARY 1882 The return match was played at Widnes in front of a goodly number of spectators. After a well contested game, the match resulted in another victory for Widnes Excelsior. The final score was 1 goal, 2 tries and 7 minor points to nil. Although the forwards were equally matched, the splendid back play of Excelsior scored heavily against their opponents. J. Briggs of the Excelsior kicked with great judgement, whilst his brother was successful in scoring two tries in grand style, bob his dodgy runs: Quinn also grabbed a try and Connolly, as usual, played prominently. For the Rangers Alec Borthwick was the pick of the backs and played in a praiseworthy manner. |
