Biography of James Gee |
---|
HERITAGE NO : James Gee BOTTLEHAND James was a local lad who was born in St Helens in the summer of 1860. His father, Peter, was a glass maker and they lived in Wilson Street in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. In 1881, the new Gee house in Kirkland Street was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men and the rebranded Eccleston Rangers were scouring the streets on a recruitment drive. When they knocked on number 48, they received a warm welcome. James originally played for the Eccleston Rangers team at the Queens Park ground in the St. Anne’s area of St. Helens. His Saints’ debut came on the 13th of March 1880 against Widnes. It was the first match that the former Eccleston Rangers lads were completing the season’s fixtures for the Originals. The contest was marred by almost riotous invasions of the pitch by the local spectators. In all he is recorded as playing in 9 matches for the Club but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. His younger brother, William, also played for the St. Helens Rangers. Outside rugby James married Harriet Traverse in March 1884 and the couple went on to have three children. It would appear that James worked exclusively in the Glass industry as a bottle hand. James died in St. Helens in January 1917 at the age of 56. |
