MATCH REPORT : NEWTON V ST. HELENS 4 FEBRUARY 1882 The game resulted in a win for Newton by two goals and one touchdown to one goal, one try and one touchdown. G. McCormick got the try for Newton by smart following up, and Hobson kicked a goal. Just before “no side” Hobson dropped a splendid goal to seal the result for Newton. The tries for St. Helens were got by Lyons , and Borthwick succeeded in placing one over the crossbar. For Newton G. Lane and S. Hewitt played brilliantly, while of the others Hobson, Massey, McCormick, Liptrot, Barclay and Kerr were most conspicuous. For St. Helens Alec Borthwick, John Hartley, JT Rogers and Joe Lyon showed up well. |
