HERITAGE NO : Joseph Pountain LOANEE EXCELSIOR Joseph was borrowed from the Saints’ opponents for one game in 1882. He was born in Mayfield, Staffordshire in January 1864. His family moved to Widnes in the 1860s when Joseph was a young boy. In 1881 he was living in Birchfield Road in Appleton Village near Widnes. He was working as an apprentice joiner at the time. The opponents of St. Helens Rangers on the 28th of January 1882 were the Widnes Excelsior team who were based in the Appleton area. Joseph was loaned by the Excelsior to the Saints and he played in the forwards. The St. Rangers won the match that day and Joseph continued his life in the Widnes area. He changed jobs and locations to work as a cotton finisher in Chorlton. Joseph married Mary Frances Piggot in October 1891 and they lived at 97 Percival Street in Chorlton, Manchester. Joseph died in that town in December 1904 at the age of 40. |
