Biography of Tom Roughsedge

HERITAGE NO :
Tom Roughsedge

SHIPS’ CARPENTER

Tom was a local lad who was born in St Helens in 1852. His father, John, was a joiner. The family lived in the salubrious St Anne’s district of St. Helens in a house called Claremont. One of his well to do neighbours was another Saint, Edward Atherton Robinson.

In the 1879/80 season Tom was one of the lads who regularly had watched the Originals play at the Queens Park Ground. He joined the merry mob of Eccleston Rangers who played on the same pitch as the St. Helens RFC. Tom played in the forwards that day. The forward made his Saints’ debut on the 13th of March 1880 against Widnes. It was the first match that the former Eccleston Rangers lads were completing the season’s fixtures for the Originals. The contest was marred by almost riotous invasions of the pitch by the local spectators.

We have records of Jim featuring in another 10 matches but there exists relatively few reports from matches in those days and his appearances could be a much higher total. His last recorded match was against Widnes Vipers on the 7th of October 1882 when Tom helped the Saints to another win. By then the side were calling themselves St. Helens Rangers.

Tom married Sarah Jane Sedan in Wigan in 1872. The couple raise seven children, three daughters and four sons. In the early 1880s the family lived in Park Road, St. Helens but Tom was soon to seek work in Liverpool area and this could well explain why his rugby career ceased abruptly in 1882. The 1901 Census sees Tom and his family living in Mount Pleasant Close to the Liverpool City Centre and the docks. Moreover, Tom had found well paid work as a Ship’s Carpenter. Sadly, his wife died in that location in the early months of 1903, leaving Tom to care for the seven children.

Tom was living in Pine Street in Liverpool in 1911 but later he moved a short distance to 14 Van Dyke Street in Toxteth Park, Liverpool. He died there in January 1921 at the age of 70 and was buried in Anfield Cemetery.
