 HERITAGE NO : Joseph Lyon ONE OF A PAIR Joe was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 26th of October 1864. His father, William Henry, was a letter carrier. The family lived at 168 Westfield Street close to the town centre. Later Joe started work as a glass polisher. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. Joe was one of a remarkable four brothers to play for the Saints. His brother James and fellow Saints was his twin, another sibling Thomas played at full back and his sibling William Henry was a robust forward for the Club. He made his debut for St. Helens Rangers on the 29th of October 1881 in a home victory over Widnes True Blues. Joe played at half back in the game. In all he is recorded as playing in 7 matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. He played regularly for the Second team as well. His last match for the St. Helens RFC was against Birch on the 27th of November 1886. The Saints lost that away fixture. In 1891 Joe was living with his widowed mother at 46 Rigby Street in St. helens and working as a labourer in a glass works. He married Ada in 1900 and they had a daughter named Emma. Joe died on the 14th of April 1926 at the age of 60. |
