HERITAGE NO : Ernest Harding ROVING PORT MERCHANT Ernest was a port merchant who emanated from Bristol. His father, William, was a sailor. He was born ins that part in 1855. In 1861 je was living in Lovers Way Lane, Gloucester. We do not know how or why he ended up living in St. Helens. Probably, his business connections were mostly in the thriving port of Liverpool at the time. He played for the Saints in the away fixture against Widnes Excelsior on the 28th of January 1882. Ernest played in the three-quarters as St. Helens Rangers triumphed. In the following year he played against Wigan at Littlers Field in St. Helens. In 1891 Ernest was living at 126 Liverpool Road, St. Helens and had a servant named Lily Axe. Shortly afterwards he returned to live in the South West of England. Ernest died in Wheatenhurst, Gloucestershire in October 1896 at the age of just 40. |
