Biography of Thomas Lyon |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Thomas Lyon FOUR LYONS IN OUR SHIRT Thomas was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 10th of February 1863. His father, William Henry, was a letter carrier. The family lived at 168 Westfield Street, close to the town centre. Later Thomas started work as a colliery fireman. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. Thomas was one of a remarkable four brothers to play for the Saints. His twin brothers James and Joe became Saints and another sibling William Henry was a robust forward for the Club. In the 1879/80 season Thomas was one of the young lads who regularly had watched the Originals play at the Queens Park Ground. He joined the newly formed Eccleston Rangers who played on the same pitch as the St. Helens RFC. Towards the end of the season on the 13th of March 1880, he played for St. Helens in a home fixture fixture against Widnes which resulted in a heavy defeat for the Saints. The match was marred by disruptive behaviour by the crowd who employed invasive tactics to spoil the progress of the ‘Chemicals’. He is recorded as playing in 3 matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. His final match in our records was against St. Helens Recs Reserves on the 20th November 1880. On this occasion the Saints, under the St. Helens Rangers banner were victorious. In the Spring of 1886 Thomas married Mary Hooton and they went on to have three children. In 1891 the young family were living at 202 Prescot Road, St. Helens and Thomas was working as an engine driver. Not soon after his wife Mary died. On the 16th of February Thomas married again this time to Elizabeth Miller. The couple settled to live at 57 Brook Street and Thomas decided to open a fish and chip shop there. At some point over the next decade his second wife died and Thomas moved into 29 Keswick Road. He also gave up frying for a living and returned to the rails to drive a locomotive for the local Gas Works. Thomas died in St Helens in January 1921 at the age of 57. |
