Biography of William Robertshaw |
---|
HERITAGE NO : William Henry Robertshaw MOBILE CLERK William was born in St. Helens on the 27th of November, 1880. In 1871 he was living with his mother at 80 College Street, St Helens. His mother had a shop on the premises. William played for the newly formed Eccleston Rangers in the 1879-80 season. His Saints’ debut came on the 27th of March 1880 against Widnes. Many former Eccleston Rangers lads were completing the season’s fixtures for the Originals in final game of the campaign. The Saints played at Widnes and went down to a hefty defeat. He made 4 appearances for the Saints as a three-quarter. Our records are somewhat limited because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period. The number of his appearances was likely to be much higher. His final appearance was against Liverpool Resistance on the 12th of November 1881 and the St Helens Rangers were victorious that day. In 1879 he married Margaret Anderton and 1881 they moved to a house at 126 Stanhope Street, St Helens. The couple went on to have eight children. William progressed quickly in his employment and became the Works Manager at a local glass firm. When William died on the 3rd of June 1940 at the age of 81 he was living at 215 City Road in the Windlehurst area of St. Helens. |
