Biography of Robert Mustard |

HERITAGE NO : Robert Mustard GLASS BOTTLE BLOWER Robert was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 17th of February 1862. His father, James, was a glass bottle maker from Seaton Sluice in Northumberland. In 1881 Robert was living with his parents at 81 Raglan Street in St. Helens. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. In the 1879/80 season Robert was one of the young lads who regularly had watched the Originals play at the Queens Park Ground. He joined the merry mob of Eccleston Rangers who played on the same pitch as the St. Helens RFC. Robert played for Eccleston Rangers against Widnes Seconds on the 1st of November 1880. Towards the end of the season on the 13th of March 1880, he played for St. Helens in a home fixture fixture against Widnes which resulted in a heavy defeat for the Saints. The match was marred by disruptive behaviour by the crowd who employed invasive tactics to spoil the progress of the ‘Chemicals’. He married twice. His first wife Louisa Stevens produced three children but passed away in 1902. Robert then betrothed Sarah Green who continued Robert’s fatherhood with another 8 children. Following his father’s footsteps Robert worked as a glass bottle maker. He died in St. Helens on the 31st of May, 1936 at the age of 74. |
