Biography of William Henry Lyon |
---|
HERITAGE NO : William Henry Lyon GLASS POLISHER ENDED UP AT THE SEASIDEWilliam Henry was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 24th of February 1861. His father, also named, William Henry, was a letter carrier. William Henry became a glass polished in his early years of employment. As a child William lived at 168 Westfield Street, St. Helens right in the middle of the town centre. William was one of a remarkable four brothers to play for the Saints. The twins Joe and James and his younger brother Thomas also played for the Club. In the 1879/80 season William was one of the young lads who regularly had watched the Originals play at the Queens Park Ground. He joined the newly formed Eccleston Rangers who played on the same pitch as the St. Helens RFC. He played regularly for that team in that campaign. Towards the end of the season on the 13th of March 1880, he played for St. Helens in a home fixture fixture against Widnes which resulted in a heavy defeat for the Saints. The match was marred by disruptive behaviour by the crowd who employed invasive tactics to spoil the progress of the ‘Chemicals’. In all he is recorded as playing in 16 matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be much higher. His last recorded match was for St Helens RFC on the 12th of `January 1884 against St. Helens Recs. Their local rivals were too strong for the Saints on that particular day. He married Martha Ellen Hilton in January 1886 and they went on to have two children, both boys. In 1911 William was living in Park Road, Parr, St. Helens and working as a lodge-man. His wife, Martha, died mot long after. At some point William moved down south and married again, this time to Mary. The new couple settled in Southend on Sea where William died in October 1945 at the age of 83. |
