Biography of Robert Valentine

HERITAGE NO :
Robert Valentine

SPRINTER AND TURNER

Robert was born in Haydock, Lancashire in October 1850. His father, Joseph, was a publican and his hostelry was in Peasley Cross Lane in St. Helens. The family moved to live in Lowe Street in the centre of St. Helens. Robert was a fitter and turner.

In 1979-80 he was an Eccleston Ranger’s player and a noted athlete and sprinter who would take part in any of the summer sports days at the various clubs. He made his debut for the Eccleston Rangers on the 1st of November 1879 in a home fixture against Widnes Reserves. Robert utilised his speed by playing in the three-quarters. His Saints’ debut came on the 27th of March 1880 against Widnes. Many former Eccleston Rangers lads were completing the season’s fixtures for the Originals in final game of the campaign. The Saints played at Widnes and were slaughtered by the Chemicals.

Robert married Alice Daniels in October 1875 and they went on to raise three children. Initially the couple found a home in Atherton Street, St. Helens but soon made a short distance to 27 Hamer Street in the town.

Sadly, Robert’s wife died in December 1897. Robert to moved to live in lodgings in Warrington at 41 Ashton Street. He also changed his occupation top become a millwright. However, it was not long before Robert returned to St. Helens for the rest of his days.

Robert passed away in March 1934 in St. Helens, aged 83.
