Biography of Thomas Ashall |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Thomas Ashall POT MAKER Thomas was born in St. Helens on the 4th of January 1861. His father, also named Thomas, was a pot maker. In 1881 the family were living at 87 Raglan Street, St. Helens. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. Thomas played two matches for St. Helens RFC . Both games were against Widnes at the conclusion of the tumultuous 1879/80 season. He was a half back who had previously registered a match for the Eccleston Rangers earlier in the same campaign. The Saints lost both of the encounters by considerable margins with the first of those being played at the Queens Park ground. The home game was characterised by severely disruptive behaviour on the part of the home supporters. On the 5th of February 1882 Thomas married Hannah Sophia Williamson. |
