 HERITAGE NO : Richard Norbury STONE MASON Richard was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 9th of July 1861. His father, Thomas, was a sheet glass maker. The family lived at 31 Ragland Street, St. Helens right in the middle of the hotbed of rugby in the town with many lads of his age playing for the Saints or the Recs. As a boy Richard would watch the Saints play at the Queens Recreation Grounds in Boundary Road and later up at Queens Park off Prescot Road. He made his debut for the Eccleston Rangers on the 7th of February, 1880 against the Widnes True Blues. He ended up on the winning side that day. His Saints’ debut came on the 13th of March 1880 against Widnes. It was the first match that the former Eccleston Rangers lads were completing the season’s fixtures for the Originals. The contest was marred by almost riotous invasions of the pitch by the local spectators. In all Richard is recorded as playing 6 matches but he probably played in quite a few more as the team lists are somewhat incomplete in those years.. The tough forward played his last match in an away fixture against Tranmere on the 12th of March 1881. Unfortunately, the Saints lost on that occasion. He married Ellen Moody on the 7th of October 1887 and they went on to have 5 children. Richard worked as a stone mason which was a relatively lucrative job. He moved to a more salubrious area of the town in Dentons Green and the family resided at 54 Greenfield Road. In 1911 the Census tells us that his daughter, Bessie, was a student at Liverpool University which was quite an achievement in those days. Richard died in St.Helens in November 1931 at the age of 70. |
