Biography of Tommy Barnes |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Tommy Barnes WIRE WORKER Tommy was born in Warrington in January 1866. His father, William, was a joiner but Tommy found his employment in the highly productive wire making factories of the town. He married Fannie and they produced two daughters. In 1911 he was living at 160 Church Street, Warrington and he had progressed to become a foreman in a wire works. Tommy played in two consecutive matches for the Saints at the start of the 1888/9 season. He was a highly rated winger and the Saints wanted to attract him to the Club on a long term basis. On the 1st of September he faced the splendidly named Mr. Higson’s Salford team in a home fixture. That game also witnessed the inaugural match of the legendary Billy Cross and his chum from Kendal, Pasha Graham. We are assuming that this was a charity match to get the leather ball rolling for the new season. One week later Tommy featured in the Centre position once again as then Saints tackled the less than charitable Batley. In the home fixture, Batley duly inflicted a loss upon the hosts. He died in his hometown in January 1926 at the age of 60. |
