 HERITAGE NO : George Christopher Howard IRON AND METAL MERCHANT FROM WARRINGTON George was born in Warrington in October 1866. His father, also named George, was an Iron and Metal merchant. George was a skilful half back and played 10 matches for the Saints. He made his debut against the curiously named Mr Higson’s Salford team on the 1st of September 1888. In case you are wondering, Mr. Higson was the Chairman of Salford RFC. The match was played at the Cricket grounds in Dentons Green and George ended the day on the winning team. His last appearance was against Birch on the 3rd of November 1888 when the Saints were winners again. George came from a family who was very comfortably off. He worked in his father’s Iron and Metal Business and eventually took over the reins. His business connections saw him join the Freemasons. George married Alexandria Victoria one the 31st of October 1895 and they had two children. The couple lived at Leigh Villas in Grappenhall before moving to live at 8 Froghall Lane in Warrington, closer to his business. George died in Grappenhall on the 13th of July 1935 at the age of 68 and left the handsome amount of £9619 in his will (Worth almost £900 000 in 2023). |
