Biography of William Barton

HERITAGE NO :
William Barton

TROUBLE BREWING

William was born in St Helens on the 4th of December, 1871. His father, also named William, was an Iron moulder. The family lived in a vibrant neighbourhood that produced many players for the Saints in the 1880s. In 1881 he was resident at 2 Wilson Street in the town.

He made his debut for the Saints at the tender age of 16. Furthermore, he was thrown into the pack of forwards. At the time he was working as a general labourer which would have stood him in good stead for a game of rugby football. William’s first match was an away fixture at Wigan. The Saints suffered a defeat that day against their big rivals. William played regularly in the second team with an occasional outing with the big boys.

In October 1894 he married Ada Bates and they proceeded to build a family with six children. Just after the turn of the century the family moved to live in Moss Bank, St. Helens and William worked as a beer fermenter and brewer. In 1911 he was recorded on the Census as living with his family at 54 Hanover Street, St. Helens and operating as a plater in a wheel iron works.

We do not know what happened to the family after this date. Clearly, William was very adaptable in the work environment. Perhaps he tried his hand across the Atlantic Ocean which was a prevalent trend at the time.
