CLOGGER FORWARD

Ralph was a local lad who was born in Stalybridge on the 13th of December 1860. His father, also named, Ralph, was a clogger and shoemaker. It was his father who decided to move across Lancashire and set up a clogging business in St. Helens to serve the town’s increasing number of industrial workers. Initially the family settled at 32 Liverpool Road in St. Helens.

Ralph was a good forward who made his debut for the Saints on the 21st of January 1882 in an away victory over Oldham side Glodwick. He went on to make 28 appearances for St. Helens. He could also play as an half back which intimates that he had good handling skills. His final match was against Ossett on the 9th of April 1887, sadly his last game ended in defeat.

By 1881 Ralph the Saint had followed his father’s clog-steps into the same trade. He married Margaret Hague who hailed from Darwen in 1887 and the couple lived at 2 Barton Street in St. Helens and eventually brought up four children.

At some point in the 1890s Ralph returned to East Lancashire to the settlement of Hurst near the town of Ashton-under-Lyne.

He died in Ashton-under-Lyne on November the 8th 1932 at the age of 71.
