MATCH REPORT : Fairfield v St. Helens 1 December 1877 The match was played at Fairfield and would have been a good match apart from the fact that the St. Helens team played three men short, though they were joined by two men somewhat later on. Fairfield kicked off and in the first half compelled their opponents to touch down twice in self-defence. When the ends changed neither side had an advantage for some while. However near the end the superior weight of the Fairfield team managed to forced a scrummage over the Saints’ line, obtaining the only try of the game. The goal kick was unsuccessful. The match ended in favour of Fairfield by one try to nil. For St. Helens C.E. Twining showed best form. |
